For many of us, the arrival of the Fantasy Football season is the closest thing to the feeling we have when we were kids at Christmas. For me, it's the first time I've seen a Fantasy Football magazine on a grocery store shelf. Today, most of the information in magazines is available online on numerous fantasy football sites. However, there is still something tactile and wonderful about a fantasy football magazine. It goes everywhere with me, I highlight it, I read it from beginning to end several times and I consume them completely. The arrival of the season's first magazine begins with the ever-increasing anticipation that builds up and builds up until it peaks for the first time at the fantasy football auction or project and then again during the first week of the season. Regular and then once more every Sunday for the next 4 months. God help me, I love Fantasy Football and it all starts with the first sighting of a magazine in the grocery store.
So what makes a good fantasy football post? Content, content and more content is ultimately what you are looking for. Some nifty graphics and images help add sizzle to the steak, but the key really is excellent writing and lots of data. Some magazines combine all those attributes quite well. My visit to the magazine in recent years has been Fanball. They do a good job balancing humor and content. They work well in the graphics department, other magazines make graphics better, but then tend to fall short on content. I think ESPN's offer is an example of this, it seems slippery but a little light comes out on the material. One of the key things you want to check before spending your $ 8.95 is whether the information they provide is relative to your league-specific size and rules. You can recalibrate the issues to meet your league settings as long as you know what the magazine issues are based on. But if they don't tell you the league size or starting amounts, then you have no way of knowing if those numbers are accurate for your league.
I would recommend spending a lot of time reviewing each magazine before buying. If you're in a grocery store with the kids, you may have to hold on and go. But if you are alone, go to the island of the magazine before going to load cold and frozen articles. Do not feel uncomfortable being on the same island for 20 minutes, it is important that you do it well. So take your time and choose the right magazine for you and the rules of your league and then sit back, enjoy and immerse yourself in everything. Good luck to your fantasy football team in 2010.
